The Tail-Wagging Truth: How My Pit Bull Transformed My Well-Being

You know that feeling when you come home after a long day, and all your stress seems to vanish? Yeah, it’s not the cozy couch or a glass of wine; it’s my ten-month-old pit bull, Bully, who turns “Welcome home” into “You’re my hero!” That furry ball of joy has done wonders for my well-being, and today, I want to share how a pet dog can enhance your life in ways you never imagined.

Bully the pit bull

First things first,

let’s get this out of the way: I’m a proud pit bull mom.

And while many people still hold onto those outdated stereotypes about pit bulls being aggressive or troublesome, let me tell you right now: Bully is proof that a dog’s personality is as unique as their owner.

Full of love, energy, and an uncanny ability to make me feel like the most important person in the world, my pup constantly reminds me of the simple joys in life.

The Best Stress Relief

Have you ever noticed how just a few minutes with a pet dog can boost your mood? It’s like having your own personal cheerleader minus the pom-poms. When I get home from work, Bully greets me with such enthusiasm, you'd think I had just returned from a decade-long expedition in the Himalayas instead of a day at the office. He jumps, runs around in circles, and gives tons of pit bull kisses that wipe away the worries of the day.

Research has shown that spending time with pets can lower cortisol levels (that’s the stress hormone, for those of you not in the know) and increase oxytocin (the love hormone). So, while I may have spent my day navigating deadlines and meetings, a quick snuggle with Bully sends a rush of calming vibes through my body. Just moments with him, and I’m left wondering: why don’t they give every stressed-out office worker a therapy dog?

Fitness Buddy Extraordinaire

Let’s face it: life can get busy, and it’s often easier to hit ‘snooze’ on our fitness goals than to lace up running shoes and hit the pavement. But as a pit bull mom, I can tell you that my high-energy, ridiculously enthusiastic pup is my personal trainer on four legs. No way would Bully let me skip out on walks or runs—he demands it.

Each day, we venture out together for afternoon walks around the neighborhood, and trust me, it’s a workout in more ways than one. With Bully pulling me towards every intriguing scent and chasing anything that moves (squirrel, anyone?), I get not just a physical workout but a dose of laughter, too. I mean, who wouldn’t chuckle watching a dog perform Olympic-level gymnastics while attempting to catch a frisbee?

In fact, dog owners are more likely to meet daily physical activity recommendations than non-owners. Regular dog walking boosts cardiovascular health and keeps people engaged with outdoor exercise (Barcelos et al., 2020; Oliva & Johnston, 2021). Plus, those walks have become a golden opportunity to meet neighbors, other dog lovers, and chat about everything from the latest Netflix shows to the best dog treats. Socializing is essential for mental health, and with Bully as my wingman, I’ve made more friends in just a few months than I did in a year!

Unconditional Love and Companionship

One of the most remarkable gifts of having a pet dog, such as a lovable Bully, is the unwavering love and companionship they provide. These loyal companions are always there for you, ready to offer comfort and support. Whether you’ve had a particularly lousy day filled with challenges or you’re celebrating a significant win—like finally getting through that Netflix series you’ve been binging—having a pit bull by your side can truly enhance your experience.

Their playful antics and affectionate nature add a unique magic to every moment, transforming even the simplest of days into something special. The bond you share with your dog can bring joy, laughter, and a sense of belonging that is simply irreplaceable.

A Lesson in Mindfulness

Interacting with dogs fosters mindfulness — the ability to stay present. Daily walks and play sessions encourage attention to the present moment and reduce anxiety (Oliva & Green, 2021; Simonova, 2023).

Dogs are natural at being empathetic. They can sense when you’re feeling down, and without saying a single word, they’ll curl up next to you, providing warmth and comfort. The simple act of petting Bully as he leans against me grounds me. It reminds me that I am not alone in this crazy world, and someone is always looking out for me.

And let’s be honest, it’s hard not to smile when you have a dog furiously wagging their tail, practically begging for each and every tickle.
